Ski Clothing
Ski clothing consists of weather proof or resistant material
coupled with an insulating lining. The outer material is the most important
layer and is typically made of a synthetic material that is then further
coated with a water proof coating. The tighter the weave the less water
will be allowed to get through but this also affects the breathability
of the fabric, i.e. sweat will collect inside.
The best way to wear and collect ski clothing is layer by layer. The
bottom layer is the most important and should consist of a highly breathable
and insulating fabric such as polypropylene that covers the body from
neck to wrist to ankles. Don’t skimp on the long johns, these
are the most important part. The next layer should be an insulating
layer that is easily removable. It doesn’t necessarily need to
be water proof or resistant but that is always a plus. Fleece and down
make excellent insulating layers.
The final layer of ski clothing is the shell which is ideally water
proof and breathable. Gore-Tex is a widely used fabric because it has
both of these abilities although every company has their own version.
This is also the layer that everyone will see so make sure to find one
that is both comfortable but also stylish. Plenty of pockets are always
a plus and many companies are beginning to add other features such as
built in heat and iPod controls.
