Skis
Skis are long flat devices that are strapped to the feet
and allow for ease of movement through snowy and icy conditions. They
are typically used recreationally at ski resorts where lifts provide
transportation to the top of the mountain and the skiers adjust the
position of the ski to transport themselves downhill safely.
Over time skis have evolved from completely wooden construction to
a complex blend of materials such as titanium, carbon composites, glass,
Kevlar, and polycarbonates although wood is still commonly used as well.
They have changed shape over time from long, thin, stiff and strait
to short hourglass shaped flexible yet still very stable materials.
The base of skis is a combination of a soft hydrophobic material that
absorbs wax and a hard, sharp edge. When the ski is turned on its edge
by the skier they can increase the friction applied to the snow or ice
and change direction or stop. The hydrophobic surface base allows the
ski to glide on the snow and with the proper wax high speeds can be
achieved.
